Braces Advice

Hello everyone!

Today’s post is a bit different from usual, but I thought it would be fun to share the experience I’ve had with my braces so far! I’ve had them on for almost 2 years, and hopefully I’m getting them off soon (crossing my fingers)!

Here are a few things that I learned throughout my experience, and hopefully I can help you out if your going through the same process!

  • Just beginning | When I just got my braces on, they were super painful. I could hardly eat solid foods for over a week (maybe even longer). Your teeth will be super sensitive and even the slightest touch will hurt them. But DON’T WORRY! It only stays like that during the beginning. Soon, you’ll get used to them and forget they’re even there. When you get them tightened, they’re going to be a little sensitive again, but this only lasts for a day or two.

  • Rubber bands | You will most likely need to wear rubber bands on your braces at some point. They’re meant to fix your jaw alignment. These will probably be almost as painful as your braces where when you just get them on.. They pull on your jaw and will feel really uncomfortable at first. I was told to wear my rubber bands 24/7, but I only ever wore them at night because it was too much of a hassle to put them on and off during the day whenever I wanted to eat. BUT – you HAVE to wear them, or else the orthodontists will delay taking your braces off! Even if you don’t wear them all the time, try to not forget about them.

  • Cuts and sores | Just a heads up, your inner cheeks will get sore and torn. And they will last for as long as you have your braces on. I still have them in my mouth, and it’s been two years! I definitely don’t feel the pain anymore, but every once in a while I’ll wake up in the morning and have a really sharp, stinging feeling in them (it’s weird). They’re also going to cut the inside of your mouth. Ironically, I have a cut right under the inside of my lip right now. I don’t get these often, but this cut has been in my mouth for over a week, and I’ve had a lot of trouble even moving my mouth because my braces will rub against the tear and make it hurt terribly. This is probably the worst part, but it should (hopefully) go away soon! I can’t think of any other ways to deal with these than the wax that they give you. I’m, personally, not a huge fan of the wax (I think it’s kinda gross), but desperate times call for desperate measures!

  • Colors | This is definitely a lighter topic! When choosing colors for my braces, I usually stick with silver, even though I have experimented with blues and greens. I definitely suggest always using silver; they attract less attention to your teeth and sometimes the other colors turn out really vibrant and eye-catching.

And that concludes this post! Thank you so much for reading! I hope I could help you if you’re having a tough time with your braces. Over 4 MILLION people in the world wear braces, and they definitely save your teeth in the long run, so be thankful!

If you currently have or have had braces in the past, I’d love for you to comment and share all about it, and I’ll see you in my next post!
